Catching Up Maybe
Not sure what happened to the last three days.  Must lead a boring life.  Sunday and Monday were rather routine, not much going on; reading, doing crosswords, tweaking this website, bought some HP Ink on Amazon.  Waiting for the new Dell Color Laser printer to arrive, got that on eBay.  Got out bid on a RonCo rotisserie.  We've had one for about 10 years, use it a couple time a month, it's falling apart.  So a new one is in order.  Maybe I'll try eBay again after the Cycle Oregon Ride.

Had lunch with John and Rita Marie and their friends from Oregon at IL Fornio in Walnut Creek.  Parking was easy, what a surprise.  Service slow, company good, food good, so it was a good time.

I walked for an hour yesterday, took today off.  Can't see to get motivated to get on the bike, hope I'll be OK next week in Oregon.

Got new that my good friend and high school buddy Bob is in the hospital with some blood problems, sounds dire, but he is healthy and should be ok, I sure hope so.

That's about it for now.

Lazy August Saturday
Not much happening today.  Rosemary went to Express Fitness this morning for her session with weights and other stuff.  Then off to grocery stores for weekend and week provisons.  I stayed home and vegatated.

The Italian Buffet Dinner at Castlewood was very good.  A nice anitpasto, grilled veggies, prosecuto, salads and three or four Italian entrees.  A good deal.  We joined Castlewood a couple months ago as "Social Members" no golf.  It's very resasonable and we can use the exercise room, the olympic pool, tennis courts and driving range anytime we want.  The club also has some excellent family parties at Holloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas so we'll be taking the "kids" and grandkids in the near future.

Nice day today, in the mid 70's, no wind.  I didn't have any ambition so didn't get on the bike or do an hours walk.  Tomorrow.  I do have to get some bike rides in, that Cycle Oregon is fast approaching!

Not a very exciting day in the life of the little Dickie Small.

Abalone & A Retirement Party

Today was a "social" day.  We meet Pat and Eleanor at Cafe Fannie in Berkeley.  Outside seating, next to Acme Bakery, We shared two orders of poached eggs and prosciutto.  (I cannot believe what just happened.  I just spent almost 2 hours updating this post, when I clicked on "done" there was an "error on the page" and I lost the whole damn thing!)  I'm pissed!  And distraught!  Ah well I guess I'll just starting copying to a clipboard in the future.  What a bummer!  But I'll just shut up and type.

So here we go again.  The cafe was crowded, we snagged an outside corner table and waited for Pat and Eleanor who ran about 15 late.  I wished Eleanor a happy birthday as she was exiting the car, Pat had forgotten!  He was embarrassed. We had a nice visit, they are here from Hawaii for Pat's High School reunion and his annual Abalone diving adventure.  He brought us an Abalone, which we stored in a small ice chest.

They left around 11am to catch up with friends in Fremont and to catch an airplane to Southern CA where Pat will attend the reunion.  A very nice visit.

We then went to Richmond to attend a retirement party for a friend who has worked for the Social Security Adm for more than 30 years.  It was a pot luck buffet, good food.  I was the Chief of the Facilities Branch at this building in my last job with SSA.  The lights went out about 15 minutes after our arrival so I told a few people that I planned that for my return.  Actually it was a PG&E problem, some construction workers severed a line just outside the building.  It took about 20 minutes to get the lights back on.  The emergency generator had the emergency lighting on instantly.  I don't miss the place.  It's been a long time.  We did see a lot of people we both used to work with, that part was fun.  Many knew about the Oregon Coast Bike ride.  Brewer was at the party, so we talked biking.

We stayed at the party for about 2 hrs.  Parked on the street so had to get going as they ticket after 2 hrs.  No tickets, we stopped at WalMart on the way home to pick up a self inflating mattress for the camp cot, and an ironing board for me.  (I'm trying to save money and gas by doing my own shirts and slacks instead of taking them to the cleaners).  I can watch some instant view NetFlix while ironing.  I watch Dexter while doing shirts and slacks this afternoon.

Around 6:30 I decided to look up some Abalone recipes on the net, and then look at what Pat brought us.  Well he brought a live Abalone.  I've never dealt with a live Abalone.  One site said get a flexible fillet knife and cut under the Abalone as close to the shell as possible.  I did that and then managed to pull the critter out of the shell.  What the hell do I do now.  What is the black stuff?  What's that blue sack?  What about the hard outer skin?  All the instructions I could find talked about the "shoe" and other things I had no idea about.  So on the phone to our friend Jim in Arizona.  Jim is an avid diver and Abalone hunter.  He was happy to hear from me and to help me with this project.  I did some small steaks cut.  Jim also gave some excellent advise about the black stuff and the sack.  It's basically intestines which doesn't get eaten.  He said to freeze it until garbage day, otherwise it will reek.  So I now have to remember to take that yucky stuff out of the freezer on Monday.

OK that's about it.  We watched The Waltons (getting that from NetFlix we're still watching the first year).  Then off to bed around 10pm, to watch the Olympic diving competition.  Boy the young Chinese diver was super.  So was the Canadian!  Very exciting.

Not much going on today.  Rosemary went to her monthly Small Christian Community meeting this morning.  Then stopped off at Destinations Unlimited to take care of some last minute business for the Italy trip next month.

We're off to the Club tonight, going to the Italian Buffet Night.  Should be fun, we might sit out on the terrace if it isn't too breezy.

That's it.

Catching Up
Not exactly sure where I left off with the Daily Doings.  Anyway got back from the Avenue of the Giants Bike/Camping trip Friday morning.  Unloaded the car, got the dirty clothes into the hamper, took a hot shower, and just relaxed.  Later we went to dinner at Castlewood with Larry & Sharron, met the DeFristas' there.  Had a great time.

Saturday I rode the bike to BART, hooked up with Bette and her grandkids to go the Rotary Day at the A's.  Francois went ahead to work the Pleasanton North Rotary booth and tailgate party.  Ron cooked chicken Brats that were marinated in beer, peppers, and other good things, I had two, plus a can of Bud (This Bud's for you).

The Rotary Clubs in District 5170  sponser this event every year, we raise money for Camp Ryla.  Camp Ryla is Rotary Youth Leadership Awards where a select group of local students with leadership qualities attend camp RYLA in the Santa Cruz mountains to hone and enhance their leadership skills.

Nice sunny, warm day.  A's played against Chicago White Sox, they didn't play well.  Doubled played out twice with the bases loaded.  They lost 2-1.  Got back to the BART station, someone lifted the headlamp from the bike, otherwise everything else intact.

Saturday night off to birthday party, the 60th for the husband of one of the women in Rosemary's book club.  Dress like we did in the sixties, the birthday boy wore a Sgt Pepper outfit, and there were a couple of other men dressed that way.  Lots of tie dyed shirts, skirts, etc.  Some headbands.  I went in an Aloha Shirt and slacks, not too 60s ish.  It was fun.

Good news on Sunday, Stephanie and Al are here.  We went over to their new rental in Alamo, nice house, nice surroundings, on an acre which includes a small walnut orchard.  I'll have to harvest some walnuts this fall.  It will be great having Stephanie and Al back in the Bay Area.  She starts graduate school at Samuel Merritt in 2 weeks.

Rosemary sent me to Lucky's for crab, they were out so I bought two Canadian lobsters, yummy.

Today has been a slow day, didn't feel like riding, so we walked 3 miles around the development.  Doing the Blog thing, not much else.  So there you have it.

Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow
The Journeys For Women annual planning session went very well.  Rosemary spent the better part of a week planning for this meeting, so she was a bit let down after it was all over.  A feeling similiar to one you get when you spend several long hours preparing a meal, getting it served and it's over in less than an hour.  You know the feeling.

Anyway I thought the meeting was productive, there were 20 women here, from all walks of like.  New-comers met the "old timers", traveling companions (especially those going to Italy next month) met most of the other women they will be sharing their Italian adventures with.  A very worthwhile event.  The food was good, half the women brought cheeses, salads, breads and other good stuff; while the other half brought delicious desserts.  We had a ton of desserts left over, so we called Open Heart Kitchen and donated the desserts.

We got the kitchen cleaned, dishes in the dish washer, etc and took a 40 minute nap, then got ready to go the annual Pleasanton Tulancingo Sister City BBQ.  That was fun, I bid in the silent auction on a case of wine, lost by a mere $5.  The turn out was very good, it looked to be a successful annual fund raising event.  We stayed until 9pm, but we were pretty pooped.

Got home, watched one episode of Law and Order, Criminal Intent (I like this show, thank you Netflix).

Got to bed, read for a while, turned off the light and it was Sunday.

Sunday August 10

Up at 6:30, had coffee, read the paper, did the crossword, Rosemary went to Church I went on a 20 mile bike ride on the new Fugi.  Felt good, shaved a few minutes off my time, legs a bit tired, but no big deal.  Showered, washed the bike outfit, then packed for the journey to Patricks tomorrow and then on to Humbolt Redwood State Park and the Avenue of the Giants where we meet Joe and spend 4 days biking and camping.  I'm not taking the laptop, so no postings until next weekend.    Until then, tata.
